Findlay came into the world on March 1, three weeks early, by C section. My water broke around 3 AM and Euan came home from work and we made our way to the hospital. They pulled him out around 8 AM and the surgeon remarked on his perfectly shaped head and red hair. He was gorgeous, but when the nurses tried to pass a tube down his esophagus it would only go part way down. They instantly took him to the NICU and that was the last I saw of him for what seemed like forever. We later found out that he had type C esophageal atresia with a fistula which meant that his esophagus was not connected to his stomach and instead his stomach was connected to his trachea. Turns out that 1 in 4,000 babies has this but for some reason there is an influx of them in the Sacramento area this Spring, and there happen to have been 5 of them within 3 months. When he was 3 days old he had surgery to disconnect the stomach and the trachea and connect it to the esophagus. The surgery went well and after an excrutiating few days of not being able to hold him, he began his recovery. He was able to go home after 3 weeks in the NICU and finally meet his sisters. Of course, they loved him! He was a great eater and quickly went from his birthweight of 7.7 to 12 pounds by 7 weeks.

Christmas

Things have been a bit crazy being pregnant and trying to keep up with the girls. They are such a handful right now. Fiona started climbing out of her crib, which has made bedtime a challenge. They are learning so much right now. Both of them are talking a lot. Fiona is stringing words together, as in "apple juice", "Mommy's cup" and "Isla's owie"(more about that later.) Isla only talks when she feels like it, but her favorite thing to say is, "Up please," which is difficult for me right now when she wants to be held all the time.

The girls were unimpressed with Santa. They didn't want to go anywhere near his lap, and obviously in the end, we ended up holding them.

Christmas was a whirlwind. We went up to Humboldt for a few days. Actually the girls were great on the drive both ways. Isla did throw up on the way home, but it wasn't too traumatic. We spent Christmas Eve in the ER, as Isla stepped on a coaster container and sliced her toe. After 3 hours in the waiting room, it turned out that she needed three stitches. She was a trooper. She actually enjoyed the wait, I think because she had us all to herself since Fiona was home with Grammy and Grandpa. They wrapped her up like a burrito when it was time to give her the shots and the stitches. We had to hold her down, and she just kept saying, "No, no, no, no, no." Poor baby. She gets the stitches out tomorrow. Fiona was pretty shaken up after seeing all the blood and she talks a lot about, "Isla's owie".

The girls got lots of gifts. They got fancy tricycles from Grammy and Grandpa and tons of other toys. They had a great time opening all of their gifts. They also had fun playing with all of their cousins. Here are a few pictures.

Halloween

I know, I know! Better late than never though. Isla and Fiona dressed up twice. The first night they were ladybugs and we went to a party. On Halloween they were polar bears and Nana and I took them trick or treating with Emmerson and co. I thought they may be hesitant to walk up and knock on a stranger's door, but after the initial candy sighting, they were all over it. They didn't actually get to eat the candy, but that didn't seem to matter.

We took the babies to the fair last week. They had so much fun. They especially loved the petting zoo and all of the junk food! See Euan feeding them the blue snow cone below. We stayed a little past bedtime and they got a little wild, as you can see in the video. Enjoy.

First Day of Preschool!

Yesterday was the babies first day of preschool/daycare. I found a great in home daycare called Seedlings. She is a credentialed teacher and follows a preschool schedule. She and her two children are also vegetarian!!! It is so nice not to have to worry about what she is feeding them! The first morning they had veggie sausage and eggs! She also has all wooden toys and there are quite a few other kids for them to play with. She told me today that they are super sweet to each other and never fight. She said if they get a toy they take one to the other one too. Great to hear since they have been fighting over toys a lot at home lately. Also, Isla fell and hit her head today and she said that Fiona was really concerned about it and stayed right next to her. Fiona has cried both days when I left but only for a few minutes. Tomorrow I have to get them there at 7:15! We shall see how that goes. Here are some pictures. Of course, the girls wouldn't stand still, so are on the run for most of the pics.

Santa Cruz

Abby and I took the girls to Santa Cruz for the weekend. We met my mom, Kristi, Alex and Isaac there and stayed in a house in Capitola. Stacy, Madeline and Mike met us there. We were there for the Wharf to Wharf but found out at the last minute that strollers weren't allowed, so Stacy and I didn't do it. Everyone else did though and we still had a blast. I'm ready to move to Santa Cruz! The girls loved the beach.

Farewell Christina and Thank You!

We were able to get a night away. We stayed at the Hyatt and went out to a great dinner, watched a movie, and got a full nights sleep!!! It was so nice. Thank you to Christina, our fabulous babysitter. She's been watching the girls while I worked since December. She said the girls were great...why are they always good for babysitters? She is off to San Francisco to college next month. We are all going to miss her.

Road Trip to Humboldt

The girls and I took a little road trip to Redding to meet my mom, Isaac and Abby for a night and then on to Humboldt for a few days. We had fun and the trip there was easy. They slept almost the entire way both legs and Abby rode with me the second half anyway. The girls were pretty hard though. They were teething, not sleeping well, and very clingy. In fact, Fiona slept with me every night, which she's never done before. And both of them ended up in bed with me in the hotel in Redding. The drive home was really bad, but I won't go into details. Here are some pictures and a couple of videos.

Grammy bought the girls little purses with all kinds of things that every girl needs. Lipstick, cell phone, compact, keys, etc. Needless to say, they were a big hit...

Who knew the Redding Mall had a toddler play area? Fiona doesn't look like she's having fun, but really she just wasn't happy about stopping play to pose for this picture.A little fun in the pool...

Christmas in July

Becky came to visit today. She came bearing gifts too. Janie and Jack dresses that the girls refused to take off after we tried them on over their clothes. So cute! We went to the Arden Fair Mall in search of an indoor toddler play area, but they don't have one. What a crappy mall! We had to settle for the carousel. Of course, I couldn't find my camera until after Becky left, and I can't figure out how to get the pics from my phone to the computer. When we got home dad had brought home balloons from TJ's. The girls also got fancy new hats from Whole Paycheck (I mean Foods), and wore them in the pool for a dip with Dad. It's like Christmas in July!

15 1/2 months

I'm back from Rhode Island! My first overnight away from the babies! Auntie Kristi and Ikey came and stayed with Euan and the girls for 4 days! She said it went great, and the girls were "easy". Obviously she wasn't supposed to say that they were easy, but hey she said she would do it every year so I'll take easy. They napped for 2 1/2 to 3 hours a day! What?!?!? They never do that for me. Oh well. I didn't get a picture of them so had to go back and find an old one. This one is from Mexico. I'm glad the girls got a chance to get to know their auntie. Thank you Kristi!

Here are 4J4's on Prudence Island (off of Rhode Island)

The girls are 15 1/2 months old! Here they are doing a little coloring today. They still eat the crayons a little bit but do some coloring too.
Yesterday we went to an indoor toddler playground with Melanie, Steve, Lucas and James. They had so much fun!Isla insists on carrying her blanket outside and it gets burrs and all kinds of things stuck to it, so I've started tying it around her neck. She looks like a little old lady.

They have been climbing up on everything!

Another J4, Babsy Glass (AKA Nancy) came to visit all the way from San Francisco a few weeks ago. So great to see her!! Wish we saw her more especially since she is heading back to DC soon. Thanks again Nancy!

Sorry it has been so long! The girls are growing so fast. They are running and climbing all over the place. They have a new obsession with hats and things on their head. They love each other and can entertain each other for long periods. They have also started fighting over toys. Isla is still heavier, so usually wins. Fiona said her first word, "ducks", although we aren't real certain that she knows what a duck is. She also says "uh oh" a lot. Isla babbles a lot and neighs a little at the horse on our calendar but thats about it. They love to get out of the house. As it heats up in Sacramento, we are always looking for new ways to cool off. Lately we've been running through the sprinklers and spending a lot of time in our pool.

The girls are one! What an amazing year we've had. It seems like it has just flown. The girls are walking and seem so grown up all of a sudden. The birthday party was great fun. It was a little chilly but as long as we stayed in the sun we were ok. Thank you to those of you that came to celebrate with us, and those who couldn't be with us but sent cards, gifts and well-wishes instead.

They walked! Both of them on the same day. Fiona took about 4 steps and Isla took 2. It was while I was at school, of course. But luckily, Euan and Aileen got Fiona on video. Babies' First Christmas

Well, the babies' first Christmas came and went and it was filled with excitement as well as a bit of exhaustion. This was Euan's first trip up to Humboldt in a year, so that was fun. The girls were so excited with all of their toys they didn't know what to play with first. They met their cousin Sarah for the first time too. It was pretty cute to watch the four of them (Sarah, Emmerson, Isla and Fiona) playing on Christmas Eve.

They are both pulling themselves up, waving and babbling a lot. They are also teething like crazy. Isla can soak a bib with drool in about 10 minutes!

It's about time!

Sorry it has been so long. Mexico and moving have been pretty all consuming. Mexico was beautiful. Perhaps not as restful as last time when I was free to lay in the sun, drink margaritas and play cards for as long as possible. Don't get me wrong... I still drank margaritas and played cards but the babies really interfered with my tanning time. I'm sad to say I'm as white as the day I left. The babies did great! They were awesome on the plane. It was Quincy and Emmerson, Carly and I and the girls. It went better than expected. However, as always, once we reached Mexico we had a series of small catastrophes. Surprisingly, none involved the girls. Just a quick sampling of some of the calamities members of our group faced: arrival at the airport with the wrong passports, head lice, sand fleas, sea urchins, lost passports....I could go on. Surprisingly, despite it all, I think we all had a fantastic time. The girls loved the pool and even went to the beach, and into the ocean for the first time. It will be awhile before we attempt this again as I quickly realized that sand and babies are a bad bad combination. They also got to eat lots of new foods as my dad did not get the memo that they were only able to eat one new food a week. Every time I turned around they were trying something new: baked potato with butter and sour cream, cookies, rice and beans, margaritas... okay maybe not the last one. I'm happy to say that this rapid introduction of new foods didn't seem to have any negative effects.

Fiona is a speed crawler these days and loves to practice standing up. Her favoite thing to do is to blow raspberries, which can be hazardous at mealtimes. She weighs almost 16 pounds,which is only the 7th percentile. This may be due to the fact that she is kind of a picky eater. However, she is in the 50th percentle for height and head size. She babbles a lot and screams with delight when she does something amazing. She regularly says dada and mama. She dances by bobbing her neck so that her head moves from side to side, East Indian style. She is finally getting her bottom teeth and some hair- it looks like it will be curly. She thinks her sister is really funny.

Isla is also crawling but at a bit slower pace than Fiona. She is practicing waving a lot and is always moving her hands. She loves bathtime and likes to practice standing up in the tub, which inevitably leads to some tears. She is a great eater, which may be the cause for her weighing in at 19 pounds (61st percentile). She is in the 90th and 97th percentiles for height and head size respectively. She loves to be read to and babbles a lot. She says dada mostly. She is usually good natured but when she gets mad- her cry is heartbreaking. She has a funny laugh where she wrinkles her nose and sniffs while baring her teeth. Sounds strange, I know, but it is really cute. She is getting a top tooth and her bottom two are pretty much in. She thinks her sister is hilarious.

They both love Oliver and he is pretty surprised that they can chase him around now. He tolerates them pretty well though. They are loving the new house with all of the carpet. It is funny to see them both tearing down the hallway towards you at the same time. Here are some pictures.

I had a dream last night that Fiona had a mouthful of teeth. I must be feeling guilty about not knowing Isla's teeth had started to come in.

I'm trying to adjust our flights to Mexico for Thanksgiving to make them work a bit better with our schedules and am getting pretty frustrated. I have 49,000 United SkyMiles and can't afford a ticket from Sacramento to LA! I am so going to cut up my SkyMiles credit card! I know that these aren't really problems as I am so grateful that we even get to go to Mexico. Gosh, I can't wait!!! Look at that pool! I wonder if I will be able to relax and play Hearts and Scrabble and drink margaritas all day with two little monkeys crawling around.

After all that talk about the girls sleeping through the night, we had a rough one last night. I caved and got them up and nursed them. Oh well, there is always tonight to get back on track.

Isla has two teeth! I didn't even notice because she hasn't been really fussy at all. Quincy felt her teeth at swim lessons today. What a strange feeling to put your finger in her mouth and actually feel teeth! Especially since I have been expecting them for so long and feeling nothing but gums so often. I was almost afraid to nurse today. Today was our last swim lesson until Spring when they start up again. I'm impressed with how well they do. They can sit on the edge of the pool and fall into the water to us. They don't mind being dunked, and they both seem to be kicking a lot. We are going to miss swim lessons. I think the next thing I want to do is a music class. I love this picture of her on her rocking horse because she loves that thing! It is a new acquisition from Grammy.

It has been a pretty rough week around here. Both the girls and I have been sick with a cold for the past 3 days. I actually called in sick to work on Thursday! The sound of them sniffling is so heartbreaking and Isla actually holds her breath and then gasps for air. The humidifier has been running nonstop and they are thankfully, a lot better.

They are sleeping through the night thanks to a little sleep training (letting them cry at night). I went to visit Stephanie in Humboldt and she said that she finally had to do that for her twins. Then I talked to a friend whose 16 month old still isn't sleeping through the night and she can't do sleep training because she can stand up and throw herself back against the crib and hurt herself. So, I figured now was the time. As difficult as it was the first few nights, I am so so glad we did it. They hardly even wake up now, and if they do it is only Fiona for a few minutes. It is amazing what a few nights of uninterrupted sleep will do for you. Of course, the girls being sick did throw a wrench into it for the past few nights because I can't let them cry when they are sick.

We have a nanny! She started on Wednesday, which wasn't the greatest day to start because they were just getting sick. She is going to tidy up too and I was pretty stunned and impressed when she asked where the mop was! I've never hired anyone to clean my house and it felt kind of strange. Good strange. She didn't actually have time to do too much cleaning this time because the girls only slept for 3o minutes and apparently Fiona cried much of the time. She seemed pretty exhausted when I got home from work. She is speaking Spanish to the girls which I am excited about. She will be coming while Euan is at school, so only on Wednesdays until November when it will be Tuesdays and Fridays.

The girls can both sit up really well and are really thinking about crawling. They are both getting up on all fours and rocking back and forth. They sometimes get enough momentum to jump forward a bit. Today on the changing table, Fiona actually did put one knee forward. It won't be long now until we have to babyproof. In fact, I should probably be starting that now.

They are starting to crack each other up. I put them down on our bed right before bedtime and ran to get my nursing pillow. I could hear them squealing with laughter. I tried to capture it on film. I'm going to see how it turned out and maybe I will post it.

Home Again, Home Again

We made it back from Humboldt! Boy did that seem like a long drive this time. They don't sleep quite as much as they used to, but they did pretty well. I was able to give one a bottle and nurse the other when I stopped in the park this time. That didn't create quite as much of a scene as the big ole double nursing pillow does. It's funny because I haven't given them a bottle forever, so had no idea how good they were at it. They can even hold it on their own! Plus it is faster than nursing! They had their first hike through Redwood Park. They loved it. For some reason my poor mom had to carry Isla, and I got Fiona. It was fun to see them get tons of play time with their grandparents, cousins, and aunt Kristi. They also had lots of visitors.

Euan was happy to have us home and said they look hairier. I did something to my neck and am in severe pain (at least that was the rating I told the help line when I called to schedule a doctor's appointment today). It makes it so hard to pick up the girls and today was a long, hard day. Euan was gone at school all day and the girls didn't sleep at the same time and wanted to be held all day long. Stacy called and said that Madeline has a rash that may or may not be Chicken Pox. If it is then the girls were exposed, so now I'm worried that that is why they were so clingy today. Please no! After today, there is no way I could handle two sick girls on my own! Ok I'm going to post a bunch of pictures from our trip.

Finally........ she sleeps through the night. She must have sensed that she was about to find herself up for adoption if she didn't get with the program. She actually slept for 9 hours- a record. Isla slept for 10 just to remind us that she is still "the better baby". It was in the swing, but we'll take it. I wonder if we will ever put her in the crib again? I'm going to Humboldt for a visit next week and I'm thinking that I'm going to have to take the damn swings home with me. They are not small! Whatever works though.

Wow, it is amazing what a little rest can do. I'm surfing the internet for crock pot recipes- thinking I could make something now that would be ready when I get home from work. The problem is that the girls are both asleep: Fiona in the living room in the swing and Isla in the spare room in the swing so I can't actually make any noise. Oh scratch that, Fifi is awake. She's awfully cute. Glad we get to keep her.

I may actually get around to taking some new pictures today- it's been awhile.

We had our 6 month doctor's appointment today. All is well.

Isla

17 lb 12.9 oz (80th percentile)
28 1/4 in (99th percentile)

Fiona

14 lb 7.8 oz (17th percentile)

27 in (87th percentile)

They are both able to sit up for about 15 seconds without wobbling. They usually put an arm out to stop them from falling after that. Isla is sleeping through the night (10 hours!). Fiona, on the other hand, is having some serious sleep issues. She wakes up every 1 to 2 hours!!! The doctor told me to try feeding her cereal right befere bed, so we tried that tonight. I couldn't get her to go down in the crib so she is in the swing and has been asleep for almost an hour. If I can make it through the rest of "Dancing with the Stars" without being interrupted, I will be happy. Especially since they have great stars on this year!

Fiona is saying "dada", which of course Euan is taking to mean that she has chosen her favorite. I tried to tell him that they usually can say their d's first, to which he said, "I knew you'd say that." Oh well, I guess since he's her favorite, he will be happy to get up with her every hour tomorrow night.

No signs of crawling yet. Robyn's baby, Mary, who is a week older than the girls, is crawling all over the place and then stopping to sit herself up! I don't think we will be there any time soon. That is ok with me though since it means we can hold off on babyproofing for a few more weeks.

Swim Lessons

The girls had their first swim lesson yesterday. I know, it seems a little early for swim lessons, right? However, it was so much fun. They had us dunk their heads under and everything, and the girls loved it. The trick is to blow in their face so that they hold thier breath before you dunk them. We have 5 more lessons and then they should be ready for MEXICO!!!

Babywise is my Bible

I can't believe I haven't posted anything about this yet since this literally is our go-to guide for anything schedule/sleep/food related. I was pretty much a schedule nazi for the first 4 months and have only recently relaxed a bit and moved from a 3 hour feeding schedule to a 4 hour schedule. The Babywise book warned not to do this until the babies were sleeping through the night. However, with returning to work, the 4 hour schedule seemed so much more convienient, so I decided to try it. For the past 3 weeks I've been trying to figure out why in the *&*&(*^ Fiona is waking up 2-4 times a night. It just dawned on me that she is not getting enough calories during the day. Duh! Needless to say we are back to the 3 hour schedule and she is sleeping better. They claim that most Babywise babies are sleeping through the night by 3 months. I think Isla would have been but Fiona just needs lots of food.

Anyway, On Becoming Babywise is certainly controversial. Just do a Google search and you will find lots of anti-Babywise moms. However, I love it! It hasn't been perfect. I think with one baby it would be close, but "Letting them cry" is so much harder when they wake each other up. The book's basic principal is following an eat, wake time, sleep schedule that teached the baby to fall asleep on their own. I figuered there was no way I could rock two babies to sleep so the earlier they could get themselves to sleep the better. The book does leave a lot of questions unanswered, so thank God there is a fantastic blog out there that answers every possible question. http://www.chroniclesofababywisemom.blogspot.com/ is awesome!

Having the babies on a schedule makes it possible for us to plan our day. We know when they will be napping, eating and going to bed each night. Of course, it doesn't always work perfectly but we have two happy babies and I'm convinced that this is a major reason.

24 weeks old today!

The girls are 24 weeks. However, that doesn't translate to 6 months, it's actually 5 and 1/2. They are so big. At our last appointment, Isla weighed 15 pounds and Fiona weighed 12! They are starting to really notice each other. They smile at each other and when they are nursing they play with each others hands and faces. Yes, it is making it difficult to nurse! Fiona is starting to take the bottle better thanks to the Adiri nurser (aka the boob bottle). Nighttime is still pretty much a mess- Fiona wakes up way too much. She is rolling onto her stomach and then freaking out! We also finally broke down and bought another crib. Thank God for Craigslist! The guy even delivered and put it together for me! We got a babysitter for tonight (our 75 year old neighbor). They will hopefully just sleep the whole time. I'm just hoping Fiona doesn't wake up before 10. I guess we have to stay close enough to rush back home if she does. We are going to go to dinner at a great high end Mexican restaurant, Centro. Here are some recent pictures and a video.

Emmerson and Quincy came to visit us yesterday and wow Emme is so cute! She walks and talks like crazy! She can basically repeat anything you say plus she strings words together all on her own. The doctor says she is talking like a 3 year old already and she is only 16 months(?)! Obviously we have a genius on our hands. See how cute she is for yourself.

Yesterday I pulled the excersaucer and jumpy chair (hand-me-downs from Emmerson) out of the garage to see if the girls would fit into them yet. They love them! It is a whole new world of standing up and playing. I can't believe how much older they seem. They really focus on each of the toys and entertain themselves. They will be 24 weeks old on Friday. However, even though that seems like it means they are 6 months old, they are really only 5 months and two weeks. Wierd, I know. Anyway, check out the pics and the video.

A Practical Vegan

After reading Skinny Bitch I'm finding it difficult to justify eating any animal products. Therefore, starting tomorrow, I am going to give veganism a shot. I bought my rice milk and soy cheese, so I think I'm as ready as I'm going to get. However, I've decided I'm not going to be hard core. I'm going to do it as much as possible at home, and avoid dairy whenever possible at restaurants but if I'm at a friends house, I'm not going to miss a meal because it has cheese in it. You should read the book. Even my mom is going to give it a try!

I have been hearing some bad press about soy lately though. Does anyone have any more info on this?

Meet Little Quincy (and Auntie Sarah)

My buddy Sarah visited us this week from Rhode Island. It was her first time meeting the girls, and it was great having her here. She and I took the girls to the doctor on Friday and Isla is now 3 pounds heavier than her sister! She weighs 15 lb 9 oz and Fiona weighs 12 lb 10 oz. They also got their shots. It was probably more painful for Sarah and me. The worst though was Saturday morning when both girls had temperatures of 102! We drove to Piedmont today to see her brother and sister-in-law (Liz Arney for any Aspire people) and their new baby girl, Quincy. She is so cute and has a full head of hair. I think Isla was jealous because she promptly grabbed a handful of it and pulled! That made me glad that the twins don't have any hair. Anyway, thank you for visiting us Sarah! We miss you already!

Home Sweet Home

We're back! We had a great time in Scotland. The wedding was beautiful, and it was fantastic to see everyone. It was pretty relaxing for me as Euan's mom, Aileen, basically took care of all of us while we were there (meals, laundry, babies etc.) My parents did make it and I think they had fun exploring. I was pretty impressed with my dad's driving on the "wrong" side of the road. However, we barely survived the return journey. We didn't get the four seats in a row that we were expecting and had to hold the babies much of the time. They were very good but 10 hours is just a long time! Anyway, we have been busy trying to get back on schedule and we pretty much are. I started school on Tuesday with Euan watching the babies at home. Tuesday and Wednesday I got calls telling me to come home after 2 hours because the babies weren't taking the bottles. Luckily my friend Sarah came to visit and was here Thursday and Friday so was able to help Euan out with feeding time. Leaving to go to work that first day was rough and all I could think of was what I was going to miss (I didn't realize I would only be gone for 2 hours!). Next week will really be 5 hours a day which will be hard. I love my job so far though. It is perfect, and I'm so happy that it will all work out with Euan's schedule.

Scotland Bonnie Scotland

Well we made it! The journey over took nearly 24 hours door to door but we made it. We actually got very lucky with our seating arrangement on the plane- four seats to ourselves and two bassinets that came out of the wall. The babies were amazing. The only trouble was that the airline stewards want you to pick the babies up everytime the captain puts the seatbelt sign on! Of course, we didn't but they came around and told us to every time, so we didn't get any sleep.
We also missed our connecting flight from London to Edinburgh so were stuck at Heathrow for an extra 4 hours. We managed to beg our way into the Business Class Lounge. There we were with all the men in suits nursing the babies and trying to keep them from crying so we wouldn't get kicked out. Miraculously, we didn't. When we finally arrived in Edinburgh, we were too tired to dress Fiona in her "I love Nana" shirt but Isla had her "I love Gramps" one on and we just held the other one up. Of course, Gramps had never met the girls so the scene at the arrival gate was pretty sweet.
It rained on and off for the first two weeks of our visit, but we still managed to get out and see lots of sights, and go on quite a few walks. The girls have had lots of firsts this month. First flight, first swim (in an indoor heated pool), first real laughs, first solid food... They are really funny these days. Fiona babbles nonstop and Isla smiles a lot and giggles. Their first solid food experience was great. They eat like champs except that Fiona learned how to blow raspberries so much of her food ends up on the feeder. Isla got a rash from the rice cereal so we switched her to banana. It seems like I've read everywhere how it is a myth that solid foods will help them sleep through the night. Lies, all lies. Isla slept for 9 hours last night and Fiona only woke up once! We are loving the solid food. Besides that, we are trying to get them to take a bottle because they are going to need to when we get home. So far, it is going better than expected, but we aren't quite there yet.
My mom and dad should have arrived at the airport an hour ago. They are making their way to the train station in Edinburgh to catch the 11:36 train to Euan's parent's village, Newtonmore. Of course, I just read that the train workers are set to strike at 12:00! What a mess. My fingers are crossed that that won't happen as they are going to be exhausted as it is. I'm super excited for them to see Scotland. I think they will love it.
We are at Euan's brother, Douglas's house now and we went to see where he and Karen are getting married yesterday. Oh my gosh! It is Sir Walter Scott's house and absolutely gorgeous! It basically looks like a castle inside and out. It is going to be an amazing wedding.
Sorry I can't post any pictures because I left the camera cord at Euan's parent's house. Will try to post some soon.

Books to Recommend

Just thought I'd write a post about some new books that I'm excited about. A friend, whose whole family is vegan, (except her husband who is vegetarian) loaned me Skinny Bitch by Rory Freedman and Kim Barnouin. She says it has turned her parents into vegans too! Do you think it will work for my dad? hmmmmmm I'm gonna say ....no, but it might be worth a try for my mom, Kristi and Quincy. Anyway, I'm going to read it on the plane- that is if I get any hands free time to read. I'll let you all know how it is but I can already tell I'm going to like it.

The second book is more for you moms out there that are interested in making your own baby food. It is called SuperBabyFood by Ruth Yaron. It gives lots of great information for quickly and easily making your own baby food rather then relying on store bought food. It seems like all of the new moms I know are doing this, so I know it can be done.

3 months 3 weeks and a day

Wow, I can't believe how quickly the past almost 4 months have flown. Time seemed to stand still for the last few months of my pregnancy and now it is just whizzing by. I've just been cleaning out thier drawers and tossing all of the clothes that they have grown out of. I brought the 3-6 month box in from the garage and those clothes don't seem so huge anymore. Euan and I are really loving this stage. The girls can finally interact with us and are so much fun. They smile whenever they see you and it doesn't take much to make them giggle. They can grab things with thier hands and pull them up to thier mouth. They can roll over from their belly to their backs sometimes and they do a lot of leg lifts. We seem to have our schedule down and it has made life really great and so much easier. However, they have seemed to regress in the night sleeping department and are waking up more than ever. In fact they woke up 3 times last night! 1st at 11:45, then at 4:30 and then 6:20. The last one probably doesn't count as waking up at night but it sure felt like night to me! Hopefully that phase will pass quickly.

We are getting ready for our big trip to Scotland. Deciding what to pack has been a bit of a challenge since we aren't sure what the weather will be like. Apparently it has been pretty cold lately. It may be a shock for them coming from Sacramento. We are a bit nervous about the flight but luckily we will have bassinets. The problem is that in order to get a bassinet, you have to have an isle seat. Therefore, Euan and I both have isle seats with 3 people between us. They have no idea what they are in for.

I start school again as soon as we return from Scotland on August 4. It is going to be a bit crazy, but I'm sure we will manage. The problem we foresee right now is that we haven't given the girls bottles in ages. Euan will have to give them each a bottle while I'm at work, so we need to get them used to it again. I actually ordered a bottle online today called the Adiri Nurser. It is shaped like a breast and apparently feels like one as well. Hopefully it works and it won't be too embarrassing to use in public.

Just to make things interesting we've decided to put our house on the market while we are in Scotland. That way our realtor can show it while we are away and we won't have to worry about keeping it clean and showing it around the babies' schedule. We are hoping to get what we paid for it and then rent for a while to save some money. It would be so nice not to have to pay our huge mortgage. We could maybe even find a rental with a bit of space!

DIAPER ADDICT!

Ok I admit I got a bit carried away with buying cloth diapers. There are worse things to be addicted to however, and when they are so cute, it is difficult not to want to try them all! I got interested in cloth diapering when my neighbor, Sarah, told me about Fuzzi Bunz. She was using them for her daughter and she loved them. She said they were so easy and washing them wasn't too big of a hassle. There was no rinsing of poo involved and it was so much cheaper then disposables. Plus they were super cute. of course, I started doing my research and found that this cloth diapering was big business. First of all, there were so many different kinds and they weren't cheap! In fact, some sell for $33 each! Of course, I turned to the same place I always turn when I want to buy something that is expensive.... Craigslist. This might seem gross- used diapers, but all you have to do is wash them and they are as good as new. I'm not talking about the kind Grandma used. No, the new generation of cloth diapers are easy to use and very fun. My favorites right now are Kissaluvs. They are a fluffy fitted diaper that you put a cover over. You don't have to wash the cover every time, just when it starts to smell or gets soiled. You can get cute covers as well. I love the wool covers, and actually knitted one myself! The Fuzzi Bunz leaked at first because of the girls' skinny legs, but as they get chubbier, they fit better and better. For nighttime, we use Bumgenius. They have gone 12 hours with no leaks! Fuzzi Bunz and Bumgenius are pocket diapers. Which means that you can stuff as many absorbant pads as needed inside the pocket of the diaper. They make all in ones as well that I have yet to try. I do have to do an extra load of laundry a day, but I don't mind. I always hang them out to dry too, but you don't have to, the dryer works just fine. You do have to buy special detergent which is a bit of a pain. Otherwise any soap residue that is left behind will react with the pee and smell really bad or cause the diaper to wick and then leak. However, once you have the detergent, it's a breeze.

We have quite a large diaper stash. Besides the Kissaluvs, Fuzzi Bunz and Bumgenius', we also rotate in some Little Beetles, which are fitted diapers that are made from beautiful organic velour and seem almost too soft and pretty to use. We have Haute Pockets, which we've had a few leaks with, and Blueberrys, which are great but pricey. You've got to love all the great names.

There are so many benefits to cloth diapering. Of course, it is better for the environment. I know some people say it isn't because it wastes water but that sounds an awful lot like an argument for using paper plates rather than real ones, and none of us would do that. Another benefit of cloth is less diaper rash. My girls haven't had a rash yet. Also, they say that potty training comes earlier because the babies can actually feel when they are wet. A huge benefit is the money saved. Although diapers are expensive to buy in the beginning, if you get them used, you can save a lot and then sell them again when your child grows out of them, or reuse them on your future children. I'd say that the number one benefit for me is that I actually enjoy changing diapers. And you may not believe it, but Euan does too.

Goodbye Daisy

I've always hated it when people give up their dogs after they have kids. The dog starts out as the center of their world- usually he has a spot in the house (sometimes in the bed), a spot in the car, and a spot on the couch until baby shows up. All of a sudden everyone's best friend has a new spot in the back yard staring in the sliding glass window wondering what happened. I stupidly decided I needed a dog when I was a few months pregnant. I was supposed to be walking every day and a dog would make me do it. She did. We found Daisy at the pound in October. We couldn't believe our luck to have found a Border Terrier at the pound. Euan grew up with Border Terriers as they are a Scottish breed, and his mom actually has one now. Daisy was adorable, energetic and loved to go for walks. After watching The Dog Whisperer religiously for a few weeks, I thought I could definitely handle a little Border Terrier. I remember bringing her home thinking how mellow she was- she was recovering from her spaying surgery. Boy was I surprised the next day when I got out the leash and she started jumping up and down as high as my shoulder. She pulled me to the car and refused to ride anywhere except on my lap. She was cute, but we decided we needed some help. We spent a fortune on a trainer that comes to your house and teaches you and the dog. I promised Euan that I would definitely reinforce her training and work with Daisy every day. And I did, until my pregnancy progressed and I didn't feel like chasing her when she got up from her down stay. Those walks that we were supposed to go on every day became too difficult for me and we began to frequent the dog park instead. The cats were completely pissed off. She was worth it though. She was so cute and everyone wanted to know what breed she was. However, once the babies were born things got harder. Suddenly our small house seemed miniscule, and Daisy following me from room to room just wasn't working. I was afraid she would scratch one of the babies when she jumped up, and there was no way I could put the babies anywere near the floor. Not that she wasn't good around them, she was, she just had a tendency of getting very excited. When she chewed up her collar, her bark collar, 5 of Euan's socks and my brand new flip-flops over the course of two days, I decided I just didn't need one more baby in the house. After a lot of deliberation, and several changes of heart, we finally decided to start looking for a new home for her. We knew that we couldn't give her to just anyone; It had to be a family with a lot of time and energy. We found it! Actually Quincy found them. Her friend and teaching partner happened to want a dog and she had two teenage boys with lots of energy! It was love at first site. They came and got her a week ago. It was sad to say goodbye, in fact I tear up whenever I think about it, but I know that she will be happier there. I just got an update today and it is all good news. Her new family loves her, she went on vacation with them this weekend and was the belle of the ball. I'm glad she is somebody's baby again. I'm sad that the girls won't know Daisy, but we have our house back. The girls now have a rug on the floor to play on. I'm still mad at myself for getting a dog in the first place but at least there is a happy ending.

Breastfeeding Twins

When I first saw a picture of a twin mom breastfeeding I remember feeling a mixture of shock and awe. It looked so difficult, almost freakish. Many of my friends had just had babies when I found out I was having twins and the stories of their breastfeeding challenges left me more then a little nervous and doubtful that I would be able to pull off the double feeding. However, I had also heard that feeding both twins at the same time was the only way to ensure that you would have any time for other things like sleeping. Therefore, I was determined to at least try double breastfeeding. It wasn't easy at first. In the hospital, breastfeeding was the reason for a couple of major breakdowns. The babies just didn't seem to know what to do, and neither did I. Luckily there were a few different lactation consultants in our hospital. It turns out that not all lactation consulatants are created equally. The first one had us using a tube attached to my breast to drip formula through. What a waste of time! As if breastfeeding isn't hard enough without attaching a tube to your nipple! (The SNS system has helped lots of moms it just didn't work for me.) She also said not to try feeding both at the same time until I was an expert. Good thing I didn't listen. I knew I wanted them both on the same schedule asap, so from the beginning I tried to attach them both at the same time. During those early days I was also supplementing with formula and was so worried about how much food they were getting. It is funny that I can hardly remember that now. It is only 3 months later, and I am definitely a breastfeeding pro. I'm so happy that I went with my gut and breastfed both babies at the same time. It makes life much easier now. I'm not sure exactly how breastfeeding both will go as my babies grow, but I know that if it can be done, I will do it.

The girls and I drove up to Humboldt yesterday. We left at 2:00 and didn't arrive until close to 10:00! We had to stop twice to feed and twice for gas. This trip wasn't quite as easy as the last one. Isla didn't want to stay asleep. We are glad to be here. We are staying at Kristi's beautiful new house. The girls and I have taken over Alex's room. We brought our bassinets, bouncy seats, changing pad and lots of clothes! We are even trying to stick to cloth diapers while we are here.

So far we have just been trying to maintain our schedule. Last night was pretty rough. Fiona didn't feel like sleeping, so slept with me most of the night. I'm hoping after a day of regular naps, things will go better tonight. Kristi and co are at Alex's baseball game, but I decided to stay here and try to keep our schedule. Plus it is really windy out today, so taking the girls to the game wasn't much of an option. I made the mistake of not bringing the Snap-n-go stroller, so don't have anything to use with car seats. I'm not sure what I was thinking. We wish Dad could have come with us, but I guess someone has to stay home and make some money. We love you Dad!

Best Babies Ever!

They slept through the night!!! They went to bed last night at 8:45 and didn't wake up until 4:50! That is 8 hours of sweet, sweet, uninterrupted sleep! Isla wouldn't even have woken up. We had to wake her up to eat with her sister. This is what we have been dreaming about since the days of waking up every three hours. My fingers are crossed for more of these nights to come. I feel very well rested!

I Got a BOB!

After doing all of my double stroller research -ok those of you that have asked if I'm beginning to get bored not working, there's your answer- I came to the quick conclusion that the only strollers worth having are the coveted Mountian Buggy Urban Double (MBUD by those in the loop) or the ever popular Bob. Since I'm cheap and love a deal, there is no way I was going to fork out the $500 for a new one of these, so that left me one option...Craigslist. Two weeks of checking daily and I was rewarded with my prize. A Bob Duallie for ....guess how much....lower...lower....yep $50! OK it does have a bit of wear but it is so light and works perfectly. However, I started to go out at 7:00 to take the girls for a run and the sun was directly in their faces. I had to order the sunshield for $60 and then the cupholder for $20 so it isn't really a $50 stroller any more but I'm happy! It couldn't have come at a better time as Douglas's wedding is two months away and trying on dresses motivated me to RUN!

Well, here goes... We have been twin parents now for 11 weeks and 4 days. I'd be lying if I said we've loved every minute but I'd say it's safe to say we've loved most minutes. Fiona and Isla are definitely the highlight of our lives these days.
I'm going to use this space as a place to record thoughts, happenings, raves, obsessions and possibly a few rants mostly centered around new twin parenthood. I may even get Euan to post a few as well.
To begin with, I remember discussing being a parent to twins before they got here with a friend who would like to remain anonymous . She said, "It can't be exponentially more difficult- I mean you'd be doing all the same things with one kid, you just have to do it twice." (or something to that effect) I'm here to tell you she was wrong. The difficulty in the beginning is exponential. Euan calls it "two for the price of four." However, I'm also here to tell you that it gets easier. It must or I wouldn't have time to be writing a blog! And, of course, it is so worth it!
